This was my interpretation:

I can't understand why someone would want to experience anything less than the best. But as already noted, human-like play brings a different set of challenges and your game is incomplete if you ignore that. [So actually I do understand but I consider the most value to be had in playing the bot for its own strengths.]

So there's a literal contradiction in "I don't understand" but it was used to create an emphasis of preference rather than a dichotomy.
