How to improve your game

In Response To: How to improve your game (Rich Munitz)

I have found that over the years (52 years playing backgammon) my game has not made a steadily, even, arithmetic improvement, but rather has gone up in major leaps at a time. What causes these jumps in my skill level (and I can prove it by my ER and ELO ratings) is when I learn a new concept, approach, or strategy.

My game made a jump a few years ago when I learned cluster counting and did a better job of watching the race, and when I learned to use The Trice Formula.

My game made a jump when I learned the importance of the price of gammons and studied them.

My game made a jump when I learned to apply Woolsey's Law.

My game made a jump when I learned to determine take points and gammon prices BEFORE the game started.

My game made a jump when I learned to try to keep it pretty and play "pure" backgammon.

And so on.

You probably won't come across these and other concepts simply by playing and practicing and looking at your errors. If you want to REALLY IMPROVE your game, get help from books, articles, forums like this, coaches, and friends that share their skills with you. When you grasp an important, new concept or way of looking at the game, it will be an "aha!" moment for you, and you will wonder how you ever played well before.
