Remember when?

My memory may not serve me well. My mother once told me about an article in Sports Illustrated on backgammon. I had never even heard of backgammon at the time. She said; 'it sounds like a game you would enjoy'. I was an avid Strat-O-Matic baseball board game player at the time and I was in the process of creating and marketing my own game Play Ball, which was to be a similar type game with many improvements. It was an effort to make money out of a hobby I loved. I remember reading the article and thinking here is a game that you could make money at. I think it was years prior to my having played backgammon. I started playing backgammon in 1978 and the Magriel article was published in May of 1979. I checked the S.I. archives and could not find an earlier article. Does anyone know of an earlier, in depth, article on backgammon? Perhaps it was not S.I.?
