You need the dice rolls part of the time when transcribing a match (if you are attempting to do it all just by the moves made). Basically it happens when one checker moves all the way from 5 to 9 pips. Also, sometimes you can't tell if 31 or 11 was rolled based on the move played.

I realized this when I took movies of my OTB matches and my video often couldn't show the dice clearly. Only in the above situations was it a problem, and I would verbally announce the dice rolls to solve the problem.
