Since the 2-point doesn't fit well with the 8-point, you'd prefer to hit on the 2-point with the spare on the 8-point -- argument for 6/1*.

This doesn't seem right to me. Let's say you play 7/2*, then that spare on the 8 point is used for the two point, and suddenly you've got the dreaded points that are six apart.
