No question hitting is the play that wins the most. But it also gets gammoned a bunch more. The gammon risk is not that high since there are only 7 checkers in the zone after the hit, but it is still way lower holding the anchor. Since my sense is that the hit wins a bit more, but it gets gammoned a lot more, my preference is to try to improve my forward position a bit before taking any major risks.
