I don't have much in the way of reference positions for this, but here's my thinking. If Blue is able to close out only one or two checkers, he remains an underdog. It can be difficult to close out more than two checkers because your opponent will often anchor. The fact that Blue's reinforcements are so far away makes this more likely. If White makes any kind of an anchor, he's still got decent winning chances unless he's got all four men back.
