Three criteria that come to mind are:
In an essentially "last roll situation" when the banana split losing 55% of the time is better than the much larger number of losses that result from doing nothing.
As a tempo play - for example when there is a blitz in progress, or your opponent has a bunch of blots that will be cleaned up if you play passively. Similarly, if your opponent already has a checker on the roof and you judge that getting hit is preferable to him anchoring.
When you actually want to get hit, such as in a backgame.
