Timothy: But he correct play for this particular position seems less interesting to me than the question of whether one can develop some rules for these kinds of positions.
Prime. Prime. Prime.
Theres a rule. Vs backgames, the 100pip rule is pretty good. The backgame player requires at least 100 pips to have an effective chance at success - success being measured in number of shots gained.
Timothy, judging by the content of your posts that I have read, you are seeking theory and ways to judge positions. You have certainly come to the right forum, that is for sure. I dont know which ones you know or dont, but here are some for your research
Adjusted pip counting
Safe vs Bold criteria (Magriel) Pottles Law Lamfords Law - (some people dont care for it) Woolseys RuleOff the top of my head, I cant think of any more - but there are literally 100s of them to pick from.
Backgames, priming wins more singles, hitting wins more gammons and backgammons - there is always a trade off (do you need a BG, G, Single?), does your opponent have timing? Do you need to recycle checkers? Do you need to remove your opponent from the edge of your prime? Squeeze plays, Trap plays, banana splot plays. If you are unsure, do what the bots would do, if you are still unsure, do what a better player would do. Its impossible to tabulate all the things you have to be thinking about.
