The best process is to return/roll BOTH dice to the the opponent's side (your left side) of the board. This leaves no question about what you are doing.

Even in your case, returning a single dice to the opponent's side of the board (your left) can never be viewed as your oppening throw.

You certainly can create a problem for yourself if you roll one die on your right side of the board.
