once you have moved the checkers and moved your hand toward the die

That invites disputes about whether the hand is going to take back the move and try another or go for the dice.

if the other player [then] rolls, your move should be over and his roll should stand

The risk of having your move terminated by a fast roller seems worse than the problem that this suggested rule would cure.
