Chuck: Excellent catch...I absolutely stole the basic idea from Perry's lecture in Chicago and expanded it.

Since the goal here is to be both a test of skill and a learning experience, I like the idea of the leader choosing plays that are challenging. Hopefully, he will not choose wild and crazy positions full of jokers and anit-jokers, but rather plays that more subtly require the player to understand the game better....plays that are close between attacking or priming, running or staying back, splitting or slotting...these are the kinds of plays that really teach us what backgammon is all about at the higher levels.

I hope that players will get more out of the discussion of these plays, and seeing where they might have weaknesses, than simply seeing who the best players are.

If the goal were simply to find out who is best, I totally agree that letting the dice choose the plays is more likely to result in "normal" game play, and that would be another excellent side event in and of itself. We pretty much know which players are likely to play at very low ER's, and on any given day or in any given match, depending on their specific strengths and the difficulty of the plays, any of the great players are likely to outplay the other in a given match--so I don't think those results would be particularly conclusive anyway. But it would be fun to watch.
