Every time I play, if the tournament director allows, I always ask, "board or computer" and I always try to get my opponents to play on the computer. Why not have the match automatically recorded so I can examine my mistakes and learn from it whenever I can?

I had a lot of resistance at my club a few years ago when I asked people, and but more and more, player of all levels, have opted to play me on the computer, as they too are interested in seeing how well or poorly they played and looking at their errors. I DO NOT embarrass people by announcing their scores when they play badly, and I agree to send anyone the match via email if they want to study it further.

If you come to one of our weekly tournaments, you will often see more people watching my matches than other matches, and that is simply because they also know that if they see a play they are not sure of, after the match we can go to that play and find out what the best play is. So it is a learning experience not just for the two players, but for anyone watching as well.

As for the pip count, I leave it on or take it off as my opponent wishes. I prefer it on simply to save time...it takes long enough to consider move and cube options...why waste time counting the pips if it's right there and if both players are reasonably skilled and not likely to make serious mistakes in that area any way. Again, in the intermediate division, I think it can be a huge factor as to whether the pip count is on or off, but I don't believe it matters that much to the Open players.
