For practical purposes, I would think it would be more valuable to estimate quantities such as the probability of a gammon (from the starting position) by using statistics of actual games played by human players, rather than by running a huge number of bot-versus-bot games. This is one motivation for my question (asked in a separate post) regarding the existence of backgammon games databases.
