Why do bots have an even/odd effect?

In Response To: Why do bots have an even/odd effect? (Tom Keith)

This makes a lot of sense, but isn't it true that the even/odd effect has a direction? I just checked and in my sample 1-ply eval equity was typically lower than 0-ply or 2-ply, for both sides in a sequence of moves from one of my matches. Does anything you have written so far address that effect (sorry if I missed it)? If not, do you agree that effect exists? If so, has it ever been witnessed in other bots (someone on rgb, I vaguely recall, blamed the effect on the way tree search is done, which, I suppose, should be the same for most bots)?
