Why do bots have an even/odd effect?

... isn't it true that the even/odd effect has a direction?

It is true for certain classes of positions. For example, I seem to recall (don't quote me) Neil K saying Gnu overvalues certain holding-game positions.

But it is not true in general. Odd ply is sometimes high and sometimes low compared to even ply.
