Why do bots have an even/odd effect?

Tom: It would create artificial positions. You might be training the NN for positions that never happen or rarely happen in real play.
That doesn't make sense to me. If you're training it on a position then isn't the opponent's view both as likely and as relevant as the player's?
The equity of a position depends on who is on roll. You can't just use the reversed position with the same (reversed) equity; you have to calculate a new equity.
Ah, indeed, and it can make a huge difference in some cases. Does that point invalidate your 1-ply example above, where not only is the opponent on roll but also each of the 21 rolls has been moved?
You could train a NN so that the 0-ply equities mimicked the 1-ply equities. But the makers of Gnu decided to make the 0-ply equities mimic the 2-ply equities.
Yes, I remember you mentioning that before but I'm not entirely sure what it means in terms of the odd/even effect.
