depth vs breadth

In Response To: Depreli Positions 1-100 (Matt Cohn-Geier)

If you build a search tree of, say, all possible positions over the next 6 moves, no computer is fast enough to look at all of them. So the lookahead algorithm can choose depth (XG Roller) or breadth (usual x-ply evaluation).

The Depreli positions are ones known to be misevaluated by a breadth evaluation. It doesn't seem surprising that a depth evaluation performs better.

Similarly, I'd expect there to be positions where a breadth evaluation performs better than a depth. Not sure what those would be, perhaps highly tactical/volatile positions.

Not sure how much this has been studied. But its nice that XG offers the option to choose this type of eval.
