depth vs breadth

The stronger the static evaluator, the less you gain by looking ahead. So I'm speculating the class of positions for which n-ply/breadth evaluation would be better than minirollout/depth would be those where the static evaluator doesn't understand the initial position as well as it understands the lookahead positions. Something tactical like whether to hit. But I'm not really sure.
