I assume that the islanders have eyes that -besides having colour- also work when it comes to seeing.

Hence, they all know that there are several blue eyed persons on the island when the announcement is made.

Why would any of the islanders commit suicide over old news. Nothing is changed. Some will walk around knowing that there are 10 blue eyed persons on the island + possibly themselves. Some will walk around knowing that there are 9 blue eyed persons on the island + possibly themselves.
