Premature roll ruling

In Response To: Premature roll ruling (Chuck Bower)

Actually, I really don't think the solution is to rewrite all the rules...the solution is to reword a few that are ambiguous, and then provide a comprehensive guide for the interpretation and application of the rules so that players and directors have very clear guidelines. For example, the guide would use examples of what does or does not constitute a premature roll, and state what happens if the dice are cocked or interfered with; and what happens if the other player made his move and touched his dice and slowly dragged them instead of picking them up, and then the other person rolled, etc. etc.

As Bill Davis and others have pointed out (as a reason for NOT doing this), you can't cover everything in the guide...there will always be some things that could come up. My point is that you CAN cover MOST things, and you can certainly cover the things that come up often.

The guide will also cover, more specifically, what the penalties for infractions are; and the guide would provide more specific wording about how to handle situations where the players disagree on what actually occurred.

Lastly, the guide would provide tournament directors with some basic "philosophies" as to how to handle disputes and how to handle situations where the facts are unclear; more specific guidelines on how to handle poor sportsmanship, cheating, and "questionable" behavior.

I can't imagine why ABT directors (and players) wouldn't welcome such a guide...would love to have the burden lifted of having to make arbitrary rulings on the spot instead of having a clear place to refer to which backs up their rulings. I can't imagine why players don't insist on having clear, precise guidelines for what is expected of them and their opponents.

I can't imagine any logic for resistance to this approach other than fear of change, fear of loss of personal control, and ego.

Chuck, you may not have a rifle, but I have no problem using a shotgun after years of making these arguments and seeing them fall on deaf, unreasonable ears.
