This is really so sad. I always thought Walter was one of the smartest guys anywhere in the backgammon world. He was articulate and all of his writing was excellent.

He was the person that discovered the minimum wastage position with all men in the home board is 000357. My favorite Walter story is when I was playing him in Indiana once, he actually ended up getting his checkers in that exact position preparing for the bearoff in our game. I said to him, "Look Walter, you did it!" (knowing, of course, that he knew exactly what I was talking about.) He told me, "I ALWAYS do it."

A great guy; certainly a major loss and well before his time.
