illegally borne off checker rule

First it sets the expectation that players WILL speak up if they do notice and makes it bad sportsmanship to do otherwise.
This is one of the aspects of 'legal plays' that I find loathsome. If I honestly fail to notice an illegal play by my opponent and play on, then all the spectators conclude I am a bad sport (at best) or a cheater (at worst).
Part of the skill in backgammon is finding, choosing and executing the best legal play. I'm not responsible for correcting my opponent when he makes a substandard legal play; I don't see how when he is doubly incompenent and makes a substandard illegal play I should now be required to correct his error.
I can see how some bizarre types of plays might be excluded as not being allowed to stand, (bearing off the other player's checker, putting yourself on the bar. etc.) However, during the last rewrite of the rules we spent a rather large amount of time attempting to codify such exceptions but were unable to come up with any language that was specific enough to spell out which play types would be exceptions.
