I've had this happen to me quite a few times.

The way I always rationalize that is that my negative luck ended up costing me less than it should have, and the gammon on the 4cube that won me the match was down to one or two extremely lucky rolls, but in general my luck was bad - or worse than that of my opponent.

I never really considered the ply of the luck analysis.
