illegally borne off checker rule

The one argument I can think of for the current "Illegal Moves" rule is this: Backgammon is more fun when both players are paying attention. Sloppiness should be discouraged. The current rule helps to discourage sloppiness because sometimes it will cost you (when you accidentally make an illegal play that's worse then the legal play).
But I agree with Chuck that this is not enough of a reason to use Illegal Moves.
Of course there is another reason to use Illegal Moves ... it the current rule in place and many players are used to it. But today, most backgammon is played on computer or online, so I can see the tide turning.
