Backgammon community loses a great one...

I was saddened to hear of our loss of Walter. We hadn't spoken often over the past several years, but we were in contact a lot in the 90's. Walter was kind and smart and had a wry sense of humor. He created a roll-out program which I used extensively for a couple of key years in the early 90's. It didn't roll out the positions by itself or provide estimations, but had a random dice generator, logged results and seemed damned fast compared with those old manual roll-outs (I estimated five times faster). I owe much of the latter part of my learning curve to the use of that program, and to some extent the discussions I had with Walter.

Walter was one of the real good guys of backgammon. I will miss him.
