Long before email, and when I was someone he hardly knew, I wrote Walter a letter asking him if he could help me understand statistics I had come across in a backgammon article. I got a 2 page single spaced letter explanation from him.

I went out of my way to read anything he wrote. I think Walter has contributed more to the theory and practice of backgammon than any other person, since the Magriel/Robertie era.

If Walter attended a tournament, and I had any spare time, his was my first choice of matches to watch.

The heartfelt outpouring of sorrow from so many in our community are testament to the kind of man Walter was.
