The j.s.d. is a kind of average of two separate standard deviations (one for each play), and in general you need to know both standard deviations to answer the question, not just their average.

But isn't there one case where you can use the JSD: when the distributions of the two values you're comparing are both normal?

In other words, isn't the difference between two (possibly different) normal distributions also a normal distribution having a standard deviation of JSD?
