Agreed, by far the most important.
Backgammon has the slightly perverse quality that one evening is enough to learn to play OK-ish, and the big step up to an advanced intermediate level can be made quickly and without too much work - I'd say a year would be ample time here. Then the rather small step from adv int to top world class - small measured in the added winning chances - takes a large investment in time and effort. In order to go this last mile you definitely need a lot of dedication.
