Agreeing that desire/motivation is the most important thing, and everything else is secondary.
9. Learn the opening roll information on this site.
This is a good example. There are a handful of people who know openings inside and out--myself, Stick, Nack, Neil, David Rockwell, John O'Hagan, Paul Weaver, and a few others. The vast majority people I play have no idea what they are doing in the opening two or three rolls, or if they do they don't show it.
Does knowing how to play the openings improve your game? Probably, but not by that much. Is it hard to do? No, it's very easy. Since the people who know how to play openings well tend to be very much above average players one might think that the opening is a very important part of the game...I don't believe that it is. It's simply a question of whether you are dedicated enough to learn & work at the game or not. If you aren't willing to put in the effort for something that simple then you probably also don't have the desire to become a world-class player.
