Thanks Stein.

My own approach to solve this problem started with recognizing that "Yes, the game ends" is the obvious quiz factor solution and I came up with a foggy version of the logic cascade that you describe. I am not able to intuitively follow this cascade and why it really collapses more than one step, I'm afraid. But with your induction solution of the islanders problem (I do see they are very similar) I think I can now set up a similar proof.

It is possible that the other will be left in the dark though.

I was not sure about that, but I think you are right now. In this case I believe the other player at least has the satisfaction to be able to predict exactly when the first player will announce that he knows what's going on.
