I think you would learn much better by fiddling with the checkers yourself.

Of course I know that; but having acquired gnubg only a few months ago, I'm already occupying almost all my available computer power 24/7 with 1296-game 2-ply/2-ply rollouts of (variations of) dozens of positions that I've been wondering about for years. I could bump this position higher on my priority list but I thought I'd try asking you first.
