Howdy,
The downloads on GnuBG were not infected. Downloads weren't the source. Merely navigating to www.gnubg.org website (without a download) could have caused the problems. What happened was the main index pages on GnuBG were hacked and a hidden frame with a link to a URL in russia were added on 08/14/09. The Russian websites had created crafty HTML code on their servers that tried to exploit unpatched copies of some browsers (primarily internet exploder). If you had an unpatched or older browser you may have been infected without knowing it.
As for what malicious programs that were downloaded, I can't say (I wasn't going to download them myself and try), nor can I say what damage they could do. Your virus/trojan/spyware scanners would be able to tell you what they found installed and the severity.
