Another Issue for Tournament Directors

In Response To: Another Issue for Tournament Directors (Phil Simborg)

Why have live tournaments if you're going to play on a computer? -- just organize on-line tournaments and never leave the comfort of your home nor incur travel and hotel expenses.

I think play on a live board across from an opponent, in an adversarial relationship, with spectators standing around watching introduces the full range of challenges to a backgammon match and tournament. In addition to application of one's skills and talents, the elements of emotion, psychology, intuition, nervousness, fear, etc. are enhanced, in my opinion, in the live board dynamic. Gathering/shaking/rolling the dice; physically moving the checkers; physically turning the doubling cube, visualizing the board, the opponent, and the surroundings in their entirety; etc. all add to the ambience and thrill of live play. I think many of these are lost if playing side-by-side on a computer -- or even across from each other on computers.

I won't be playing any tourney matches on computers -- and I think the practice should be discouraged.
