I had the opposite happen to me. My opponent was in a back game and wanted to be hit. I rolled a number where the only legal play was to hit. I moved my checker and failed to pick up the checker and put it on the bar, as I should have.
My opponent was about to roll, and I stopped him, alerting him that I made an illegal play and forgot to put his checker on the bar, and I gave him the opportunity to require me to make the play legal.
He resented that I didn't pick up the checker, when it was clearly to his advantage that the checker be hit, and made comments suggesting that it was "interesting" that I would make an illegal play so much in my favor.
I won't recount the entire conversation, but how could anyone think I was making a shot when I was the one who stopped him from rolling so he could change the play?
I, like many others, am a fan of legal moves. I don't want to be put in the position of having to decide how and when i should enforce the rules and I don't want to put my opponent in that difficult position either.
