Any time Rory is involved, there will be a public jabfest!
More to your point, many agree that the auction time is a good time for socializing and getting to know each other and have some fun, particularly if the auctioneer keeps things moving and adds a little fun to the process (I like to think I do that as an auctioneer, but I assure you I love to watch Ray or Peter in action).
There could still be a pre-tournament meeting, and I think more would attend if it was shorter, more fun, and full of prizes and surprizes...there doesn't have to be a calcutta for that.
Who puts on a better show than Bill Davis every year? What's wrong with more trivia contests? I would much rather spend an hour listening to a lecture by Corbett or Weaver or Perry than sitting in a Calcutta.
I have a combination contest/lecture that is great fun, rates the players skill, allows everyone to participate, and educates the players about backgammon...wouldn't that be time better spent than a Calcutta and still allow for interaction and give Rory another opportunity to put his foot in his mouth?
