Yes, that's a good way to do electronic dice.

To me, the only big obstacle is that this is a BG specific device.

Even this is not a big obstacle. With touchscreen PDA's becoming popular, an app to do electronic dice is a viable way to go. If you have wifi, you could even have the thing send players an e-mail at the end of the match with a log of the dice rolls and each player's chosen seed.
