People may have misunderstood my point. Of course if one wants to get really good, one must study all aspects of the game, including the opening. The specific argument I was addressing was, "It is worth expending a lot of effort in order to calculate a 0.010 equity difference, because this equity difference translates directly translates into an improvement in your performance." This particular argument relies on two assumptions which I believe are shaky.
It's important to know which equity differences the bots think are large and which they think are small, but for plays where the equity difference appears to be small, choosing the play according to psychological criteria may make more of a difference in your results than always choosing the play that the current generation of bots happens to prefer.
