Why so much debate over Opening Rolls?

Taking this concept a stage further I do LOTS of self training simply playing out the first 6 moves or so.

The purpose is hopefully learning how to steer the game optimally not by memorising each sequence but by learning the correct concept (game plan) for various opening patterns.

If the dice are kind or easy then no worries but I found in the past I was losing equity when my opponent moved ahead and I wasn't playing agressively enough to "catch up" e.g slotting.

Each strategy by your opponent has a best counter strategy so to speak.
