Genuine choices

If you watch this forum closely, every time there's a discussion about ER, one of the top players will say that their goal is to win matches rather than to lower their ER. And, that making the best play every time is not the best way to maximize match wins. (How do you feel about this Cool Ray?)
This definitely extends to the choice of moves in the opening. I usually open 32D at money or at early long match scores rather than rollout winner 32S. The responses to 32S are largely obvious other than 62. After 32D, I see frequent mistakes with 21, 22, 32, 33, 41, 43 & 51. And, the play after 32S is easier in general than play resulting from 32D. The ER loss is worth it.
The obsessive interest in knowing which play is .0050 better than the other (e.g. the opening 64) has more to do with understanding the theoretical differences between the moves than it does with choosing which move to make. In other words, you are right. Creating positions which are difficult to play is an important part of the top player's repetoire.
