Generally no need to count shots.

With two checkers limited to potential indirect shots only, don't put a checker 7 pips away from your potential target when you can move the other checker closer.

That rule only breaks down in the case of 7/12 giving one more shot than 8/11. And there you have to ask the question of whether not hitting with 66,44,33 will potentially win anyway. It could be better to have one less shot AND 3 big non-hitting doubles.
