Intentionally making a bad play at the beginning of a game to throw him off, either to play for more or to take more liberties with the cube, in my book, is not honest. I can certainly see why you lump that in with the other "ploys" you describe, and again, I don't have a black and white answer as to where to draw the line.
I cannot possibly imagine that we should ever describe making a legal play to be in ANY way dishonest or unethical, regardless of the motivations. Next you're going to want to ban bluffing in poker.
