"There's lots of nonsence out there in some older articles and maybe a book or two about not letting the opp who is 3 away get to Crawford, even when he's allready ahead. This nonsense fails to take into account the huge recube vig."

True. However, there are many situations in which the 4-away player will have little or no ability to use the cube efficiently (e.g. last roll). In these cases it is good to know that the takepoint of the 4-away player is very high. In fact, so high that even with the enormous recube vig under normal circumstances, the takepoint is still higher than for money (though gammon value is greatly reduced).

The value of getting to Crawford for the leader is in fact large. That is what puts the 3-away player's gammon price for undoubled gammons at almost GG levels (and why it is usually wrong to double) and allows them to take more aggressively than for money if there is no gammon risk.

I consider the 3-away 4-away scores to be the most difficult as valuing the recube value, the wins, the gammons and how they all interact can be quite a challenge.
