6/1x as a reply to an opening split to the 18 unstacks the 6-pt while 6/1x in your 3rd roll position leaves only one spare on the 6 which is noticeably weaker. You're also in better position regarding the race than the 52 player responding to a 62 opening so you're less inclined to risk being sent back 24 pips if the oppt rolls an ace. Builder distribution on the 8,6 is also much better if you split and down than if you hit and split with the 53. Also, splitting to the 21 doesn't get pointed on all that often which also lessens the need for a tempo hit on the ace. If splitting entailed coming under the gun of 3 or > builders, a loose hit on the ace would make more sense.
