You're right: This is ruined by QF.
I tried to look at it using Magriel's safe/bold play criteria, but they are conflicting (stronger board vs fewer men back and opponent's anchor). However, white's candlesticks must surely suggest a bold play.
I'm also beginning to understand that in backgammon (like chess) you can sometimes find the right move by looking for moves you would like to make even if at first sight they seem too risky, but then looking deeper and seeing that it's too risky for your opponent to refute them in the obvious way (here, to make a single hit 22/18*). So maybe the rule of thumb is: Always strongly consider the move you'd really like to make.
Having said all this, I really don't know that I would have found the right play at the table.
