Crawford game chequer play

I made my decision...to make the 5 point, and then read the opinions of the experts posted here. Most agreed, but Neil hit.
XG rollout shows making the 5 point right by .019. That probably tells us that making the 5 point is right, but it probably is more accurate to say that "current technology suggests" that making the 5 point is right. If someone like Neil prefers the hit, it wouldn't surprise me if the next generation of bots agrees with him, or at least it becomes a wash.
Isn't that going to be the conclusion for almost all really close plays (except those where you can absolutely prove which play is better mathematically as opposed to playing it out)?
The 5 point works for me simply because I like to follow my own rules of thumb, and there are 4 that apply here:
1) usually, if you can make the 5 point, its a good play;
2) making primes is usually a good play;
3) playing "pretty" backgammon is usually right (and making the 5 is pretty), and,
4) hit a blot, prime a point....he has a point in your board, so the general goal is to prime him.
There is another rule of thumb that says if you can hit, it's often right, and another that says if you are behind in the race or the race is close, hitting is often right.
So I go with four rules of thumb vs. two rules of thumb.
However, this does go against another one of my rules of thumb: Never bet against Neil.
