A Nackgammon guideline I find useful is that the more back checkers the opponent has, the less the need to anchor. As with any useful guideline, there are two reasons for that :

  • Leaving the checkers split is less risky since the opponent has less material to attack with.
  • When leading the race the plan is to run, and split checkers are more flexible for that purpose than anchored checkers.
Somebody tell me whether I am oversimplifying things here.
