I looked at the hit for about a nanosecond, and I saw no value in the hit at all. I still don't
However, I believe that the reason it comes up so strong in fact has nothing to do with the value of the hit. My suspicion is that it is the strength of making the 11 point and the fact that after doing that 13/8 rather sucks, and there's nothing else since the back men are frozen. 6/1 is simply the lesser of two evils; the best way to waste a 5. We'd be better off not having to play the 5 at all. Shift the back men around and one of them can play a 5 which is going to be better. Perhaps unloading the heavy 6 point and getting that checker hit and sent back so early with no threats on the other side is not such a bad thing. As I said in my initial analysis, the decision is ultimately decided by flexibility, and 6/1 creates the prettiest position (if you can keep your eye off that hairy mole over on the ace point).
