This may not be obvious to players like you and Neil, who can play as well as most bots, but to lesser players, we are more likely to misplay the checkers when going for the gammon than when trying to save it. You have commented yourself, watching players in the chou, that people's bear off skills are generally pretty poor. But playing the checkers to prevent gammons is generally a lot easier.

So the answer really depends on what players we are talking about. World Class players probably do just about as well winning gammons as saving gammons, but that does not apply to the rest of us. How to prove it? I think it would be fairly easy to come up with some test positions and survery "average" players and see how they do.
