Factors for Tournament Attendance (2)

In Response To: Factors for Tournament Attendance (2) (Phil Simborg)

I don't think there's much upside in forcing (good or lucky) intermediate players to help make up the bottom 10th, 3rd or even half of the ABT Open field. For reference, the Nordic Open used to force only about the top 10% of rated Danish players to play in the championship division (this last year, there was no official rating restrictions in the Advanced and Intermediate divisions, but entries were subject to TD's discretion). Of course, the Nordic championship division has a much higher entry fee and stronger international level of competition than ABT tournaments. Adjust and apply as might be fit.

This (Phil): If you start the year off as an intermediate, you should be able to remain there for the entire year until you cash in two tournaments. If you win a [Intermediate] tournament, you should be required to move up [to the Open] the following year.

doesn't seem to go well with this (also): As for Jolie, her problem is a common one (ask Dave Settles, for example). There are many players out there who either got lucky and won an intermediate event or simply got to be a good intermediate, but have little chance in the Open Division.

If winning one intermediate tournament marks an Open player, well then welcome to the Open Paul Armbruster, Richard Armbruster, Arlene Austin, Carlos Azcarate, George Barr, Michael Battaglia, Jonathan Bennetts, Murray Bryntesen, Ralph Byrns, Owen Black, Bill Carlton, Scott Casty, Jenni Charmichael, Sal Chehayeb, Steve Cherne, Mark Donaldson, Jesse Eaton, Tolga Ece, Michael Edge, David Escoffery, Ben Elliott, Jack Fagan, Michael Flohr, Patty Geoffroy, Stevie Grund, Vladi Gudgenov, Bob Hathaway, Trisha Hegland, John Herron, Tom Hodous, Kamyar Hosseinian, Keith Hvemstad, Majid Jahanbani, Ed Johnson, Eric Johnson, Kevin Jones, Ed King, Chris Knapp, Brandon Macklin, Paul Mangone, Steve Mass, Barry Miller, J.A. Miller, Matthew Miner, Barry Murphy, Steve Neidecker, Sal Pittelli, Jim Pokela, Marv Porten, Reggie Proulx, Harold Rex, Sharon Rich, Luis Rivera, Renee Rosenbloom, Jolie Rubin, Michael Schecter, Bob Schumacher, Jonah Seewald, Dave Settles, Phyllis Shapiro, Rose Sheedy, Kathy Sorci, Stefan Staykov, Paul Strasberg, Larry Strommen, Stacy Turner, Jim Wark, Kyle Wagner, Wayne Wiest, Lawrence Wilson, and Lee Wood.

Those are the players who won at least one Flight-Below-Open competition at an ABT tournament in the last five years.

Extra Credit: Six of these players won two tournaments in the five-year period. Pick out the household names if you can.

Nobody won three.

Carlos Azcarate, Murray Bryntesen, Sal Chehayeb, Mark Donaldson, Tom Hodous and Dave Settles each won two tournaments.
